Ginger

Zingiber officinale ROSCOE, which is the scientific name of the plant, is more than one meter high, has long, narrow leaves - similar to reed - and yellow-red flowers. The used part of the plant is often called root, but in the strict sense it is a rhizome, a subterranean stem.
