The vitamin folic acid is part of the group of B vitamins. It is found in the form of folate, particularly in green vegetables, wheat germ and liver. Folic acid is highly water-soluble and is also sensitive to heat and UV light, being easily lost during normal food preparation.
A sufficient supply of folic acid is particulary important for women of childbearing age. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommendsthat women who wish to have children take an additional 400 μg of folic acid daily.
Folic acid is of central importance to the body for normal cell divsion. Folic acid contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy.
